Jim Denomie is primarily a painter whose subject matter includes social, political and historical narrative, spiritual and erotic dreamscape, and creative portraiture. A member of the Lac Courte Oreilles band of Ojibwe in northern Wisconsin, he has lived in Minneapolis, MN most of his life. Since graduating from the U of MN in 1995, Denomie has exhibited in over 120 group and solo exhibitions nationally and inter-nationally and has been awarded six major fellowships including from the McKnight, the Bush and Joan Mitchell foundations, amongst other awards. His work is also in the permanent collections of numerous prestigious museums including the Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
