Opening July 11 and running through July 27, 2019 in the Carnegie Art Center's Cook Gallery, Lonely Skies-Cool Water, Minnesota landscape paintings by North Mankato artist Andrew Judkins.
“We are born into landscape, we live out our lives within it and we die and become part of the land. It's who we are and the stage up which we live out our existence. We ignore this at great peril. Landscape is also a way of reminding us that we are part of a universe of nature and life on this planet, part of a large, intricate web. The web was here before us and we should have the utmost respect for the land, plants, animals and basic resources such as water. We are in landscape all the time, but can forget that in our busy and distracting lives. This is more true than ever with our layers of technology. When I paint landscape, I have to take a step back and look with a dispassionate eye at what moves me one moment and I am blind to as it lies before me the next. I must examine it and create a version of what I see, separated from reality by one filter. When people look back into this, suddenly they aren't so blind, so numb to the world as they go about their business. Looking at paintings can encourage people to see what they didn't before or feel what they have grown numb to.
I mostly paint places around where I live in Southern Minnesota. But I will paint any place I have been and felt a connection with. In painting Southern Minnesota, I find a joy in making people look at an area not really known for its wildness or beauty in a different way. If you seek the joys and unique places where you are, a world of wonder awaits. It's fun to paint famous and spectacular things sometimes, but it is also fun to show that what people think of as mundane is also spectacular in its own way.”
Judkins was the recipient of a 2018 Artist Career Development Grant provided by the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council from funds provided by the McKnight Foundation.

The public is invited to the opening reception Saturday July 13, 7-9 pm.
