Many families without employer health coverage did not apply for state health insurance during the open enrollment period in 2019. This is largely because there is no longer a tax penalty for going without insurance. Also, many families without chronic medical conditions believe they can do without healthcare insurance.
Now that COVID-19 is expected to affect many thousands of people in Minnesota, MNsure (Minnesota’s healthcare marketplace—started with the Affordable Care Act) is giving qualifying Minnesotans another chance to enroll.
MNSure has announced a 30-day special enrollment period, ending on April 21st, to ensure that "every Minnesotan has the security of health insurance... [to] get the care they need if they contract this serious illness"
To qualify, individuals must not be offered a health plan through their employer.
If interested, you must select and apply for a plan by April 21st, to receive coverage beginning April 1st.
Open Door's team of insurance enrollment specialists are available to help you navigate the MNSure marketplace. There is no charge for this service. If you do not have insurance, call Open Door Health Center to apply for affordable health care during this challenging time.
